I finally did it!
No, not THAT. That still has to happen.
So what did I finally do? I went out and bought myself a bike. In fact, I bought two, one for me and one for my son. His has a few gears, not that he needs them on this flat terrain, so it's not a traditional Dutch 'omafiets'.
Mine, however, is.
It's not quite as mouth-watering as the mountain bike I had in Cape Town but it feels right having an 'omafiets' here in Amsterdam even if not having brakes on the handlebars feels very weird.
The weather promises to be very good tomorrow so we'll probably go for this ride.
Here she is, parked outside my front door. Such serenity, don't you think?

What a beaut! I feel all melancholy now... I wish I was still cycling everywhere alas here in the UK such a practice is tantamount to advertising one's wish for an early death.
A classic beauty -- definitely.
Indeed...now try not to lose it in a nightclub!
Be sure to get an industrial strength lock with it!
Sehr Schön!
indeed. it's very Amsterdamonian. :-)
ps.. congrats on winning the GLBT category!!
If the brakes aren't on the handle bars, where are they ? Or are you supposed to put your feet on the ground ... ;)
Congrats on the award!
Wow! Mudguards, and a bell, too! Such luxury! I'm sure you'll cut a dashing figure whizzing through the streets of Amsterdam astride your mean machine.
Ariel: Yes, she is a beauty even if not in a leggy, catwalk sort of way. She’s much more Labrador than greyhound.
andrea: For the time being, yes, but I can imagine that it won’t take too long before her beauty tarnishes.
JP: I’ll never be able to lose it/her in a nightclub but I shall do my best not to lose her OUTSIDE a nightclub.
cvodb: I got one for my son’s bike but not a really good one for mine. Part of the reason why I was fretting about it on Saturday night.
I’m going to get a good chain for it today.
Schokolade Madchen: I’m glad you agree.
Tom Cat: Thanks for the congratulations.
I checked the awards in the early hours of Saturday morning but they hadn’t announced them yet then forgot about it until I read your comment. Cool, so I won the first GLBT category but I didn’t feature that well in the Overseas category after winning it last year.
Oh well, win some, lose some.
Esther: I’m very bad at keeping my feet on the ground! :-)
To brake, you pedal backwards. It works very well but is very strange getting used to. Thanks for the congratulations.
DougZAR: The mudguards add a certain panache, don’t you think?
Now, biking is NOT something that I would associate with "serenity." But then, if you consider that rolling over to grab the remote is the closest thing to a work-out that I get (that, and heaving myself to the fridge), then you should obviously take that with a grain of salt. (Why salt? Personally I prefer heaps of sugar.)
Anyway, congrats on the bike AND, more importantly, oh modest Nomad, on WINNING A SOUTH AFRICAN BLOG AWARD!!! He WON, Reluctant readers, he WON!
VERY proud of you.
as long as she is equipped with one of those 'tring-tring' bells, who needs brakes?
Best GLBT Blog 2006
Congrats on the win, Alan!!!! Two years in a row... that calls for a celebration.
(PS: No biking while drinking)
Congrats Nomad!
On the award and the bike :)
Does it have a name? (the bike, not the award)
redsaid: 'Serenity' may have been a bad choice but the bike looks serene, don't you think. Thanks for being proud about me.
edvard: It's tring-tring works VERY well!
chitty: I have been given a lift by a drunk cyclist before - fun, but not wise. I suppose I'll do the too much red wine and cycling thing at some stage. Thanks for the congrats.
Terri: Thank you. No, it doesn't have a name. I sometimes refer to it as 'she' but mostly as 'it'. I'm not really one for naming inanimate objects.
I had an omafiets when I was at college in Antwerpen almost 30 years ago
uroskin: So there is truth in the saying that a classic design never need change.
