No sign of the beast yet

666It's just over an hour into 6 June 2006 and I've seen no sign of the beast.

Damn, and there I was hoping for a good night!

But, recent revelations (how apt a word!) have said that 616 is the mark of the beast, not 666. In which case, my chance with it has come and gone.

If there had been widespread mayhem on the the 6th of January, or the 1st of June (depending on which side of the Atlantic you are) I'm sure it would have been in the news. Hang on...

Hmm. My understanding of the 666 thing is that 6 represents a man (being created on the 6th day), and 666 represents a man who presents himself as a challenge to god by defining himself as a trinity, hence the three sixes. So, I wonder what the justification is of 616.

Also, 666 being so popular over the years had led to lots of amusing observations, like if you add together all the roman numerals to be found in the inscription written around the bottom of the pope's mitre.

from what i understand, it does not refer to 6 separate sixes, rather it is to be read as six-hundred-and-sixty-six. Like qenny, i have also come across the theory (conversations with friends and colleagues and even at uni) that it represents the papacy. interesting debate.

Rob7534: I’m sure I’ll come across a devil before too long so no need to feel sorry for me. Thanks, anyway. :-)

kyknoord: I’m still hanging on, hands are sore, knuckles are white. No sign of impending mayhem anywhere, I hope?

Qenny: It’s such fun looking into the legends/beliefs/interpretations behind ‘auspicious’ numbers like this one. Had we been told it was 616 all along, I’m sure that it would have built up its own body of beliefs and myths but it really doesn’t quite have the ring/glamour of three sixes.

coffee addict: I hadn’t heard that one before.

JP : Sorry, babyshoes.

As usual, after reading your post, i go about the internet to do some research on the theme you posted about. After reading some of the comments as well as the definition on wikipedia, i came across this interesting artcle on the Philadelphia Daily News

Well, nothing here on Satan watch either.

Here's an interesting point - if Christians are so afraid of that number - why did the Anglicans put one of the most popular Irish hymns as number 666.

Every time we sing it, I expect the roof to cave in.

coffee addict: Good link that, thanks.

caroline: You're being beastly to me!

straighttalker: Well, what do you expect from the church most associated with England's establishment? :-)
