Surely he sees the irony in it?

tsotsi"But when you buy a DVD you are giving your money to criminals who are in the business of investing in nothing but their greedy souls."

Gavin Hood, the director of Tsotsi, is pissed off that the tsotsis (*) are selling pirated DVD copies of the film.

I'm full of admiration for what he's achieved with the film but, by all accounts, his Oscar acceptance speech was a bit cringe-worthy. The sort of performance often associated with those lacking in a sense of humour.

Perhaps he doesn't see the irony in it after all.

(*) a Sesotho word for a thug or robber that refers to an urban thug

HA! Spread the greed around, surely there is enough for everyone.

I think they made him say that. Hollywood is trying to crack down on piracy with their stupid little anti-piracy commercials at the begining of every DVD.

Maybe he is just that dense!

Maybe some tsotsis stole the irony to sell to a scrapyard.

I find the whole thing about Americans worrying over copyright ironic:

terri: Thanks. And, of course you should have voted for yourself like I did. :-)

rob: some of the cleverest people are some of the densest around!

kyknoord: I wonder what punishment we can think of for them?

caroline: that article was rather interesting!

I cant understand it they say coping a DVD is illegal but why then sell programs that can bypass the copyrights like Shrink. They sell blank disk so what is there problem.

whatalotoffun: you are right about what you say but, in this case, the pirate copies were made from unfinalised copies of the film.

babs: the only reason why i know what tsotsi means, although I could have googled it, is because I'm S AFrican and all S Africans know what it means.

froggy: what's the frog for smartass?

see how you guys pick on the little retarded girl! I can't help being this way but I'm smart enough to know frog is right," a smart ass knows how to spell." Here's another word for you...Vagina. Did that make you just cringe with repulsion?? I don't like it either, see how you just pull the bitch out in me? But savor this...smooches to you all in gay paris'(insert french accent here)and where ever you may nomadically roam. I caught Rhino's cold and am an imbecile at this point. Sweet dreams darlinks!!

I can take a very clinically detached view of vagina and not be repulsed at all.

I think I may have to teach you a few more South African words, not just slang words but more interesting ones like 'tokoloshe'. There is nothing vagina-related to that word, quite the opposite actually.

I unfortunately missed the Gavin Hood acceptance speech but I heard it was more cringeworthy than Jordan's marriage!!

Had I known about the speech I might not have been so glowing in my praise about the film winning the award.

"Viva Africa, Amandla!" he allegedly said repeatedly! Was he part of "the struggle"? Is he a black man affected by Apartheid? He's a white english South African for f*ck sakes! There is nothing more embarrasing than White middle aged Saffas trying to retrospectively react to an apartheid regime that ended over 12 years ago.

Move on Gavin, move on!

Maybe I'm naieve (shit, I hope I spelt that correctly) but for me, the bottom line is - THE DUDE WAS UP THERE AS A SOUTH AFRICAN ACCEPTING AN ACADEMY AWARD - how often do we see that happening? Maybe we should all just take a chill pill on this one. "Tokoloshi" - had such a laugh at that - haven't heard the word in so long. How about this one ... (no clue how to spell it ... oegshaya whena).

Dave, I couldn't agree with you more but Dawn does have a point too. I am VERY proud that the film won but I wish he hadn't made such a tit/arse of himself.

Dawn: I can feel a post coming up all about the tokoloshe - I think the wider world needs to know about such things! Not sure about your spelling of 'shaya wena' (my spelling) but I know what you mean.

i couldn't agree with you more regarding his speech- he should have had the whole group up on the stage with him and he should'a stuck to english...!

angel: I think I'm pleased not to have seen it! :-) But I am really VERY pleased that the film got the Oscar.

It is showing at the cinema opposite my flat, ie about a minute's walk - I should go see it soon.

My daughter saw it and said it was very moving.
