One other thing

Is stealing bandwidth a crime?

I discovered that I can connect to a wifi network in this building that isn't mine. It's much faster than my dial-up connection and, for now, it's free.

Will they track me down? Can I get into trouble?

Is it solely a residential or a commercial building, or both? It might not even be from your building, but someone across the street? Presumably they haven't yet encrypted access so whether it can be regarded as a 'crime' I'm not sure, but it certainly seems 'discourteous', specially if the people concerned aren't aware it has been going on.

I haven't yet set up a wi-fi network at home, because I've been told by some friends that it's quite complex to set-up the encryption and get it to work with all one's own machines and I wished to avoid the kind of loophole you have found until I could be sure of doing it correctly. Currently I'm on a 2mB Broadband connection and that seems plenty fast enough for me for the present.

Anmyway, happy accessing, at least temporarily ;)

True, it is discourteous. But while my manners are AWOL, I'll carry on being so! :-)

I need to get broadband at the flat at some stage then I'll be all above board again

It depends on whether your neighbours notice the large power cord snaking through their letter box and plugged into the socket.....

Actually you don't generally need to set up encryption. All you do is name your network something (say, "Nomad") other than the default name that it's automatically set up as, and you hide the network name (our router setup page has options for both of these). Then when someone switches on a computer and it hunts round for an available network, only computers that have "Nomad" specifically programmed into their list of "Networks I access" or whatever will find it. We had very honest neighbours who came round to point out that they'd just set up a wireless network and were getting the option to link to ours.
